FIRE RICK MINTER
I'm tired of hearing the "lack of talent excuse" for Minter. Sure, Notre Ame didn't have the BEST talent in the country on D, but the talent was far from the WORST.
Given this, the fact that ND's defense performed MUCH WORSE against common opponents than teams with far less defensive "talent" speaks volumes re: THE COACHING.
Seriously, when you play a soft cover 2 to "keep the ball in front of you" and "prevent the big play" and you still give up the big play, then something is wrong. If you're going to give up the big play anyway playing soft, why not at least try something a little more aggressive to try to at least get a little pressure on the quarterback (something we were unable to do all year.)
To all those who think it is purely/mostly a lack-of-talent issue, please consider this: Our defense was by no stretch of the imagination loaded with future pro-bowlers; but the talent level was middle-of-the-road, not bottom-of-the-barrel, and the defense's performance was the latter. That's a coaching problem.
